Barber/Stylist

Program Description:

The Barber/Stylist postsecondary instructional program prepares individuals to cut, color, perm, shampoo, and style hair. Students are also instructed on the proper techniques for facial massaging and shaving.  Special attention is given to hygiene, safety, skin and scalp diseases, and equipment sterilization. Included is the study of sales, business management, laws governing the profession of barbering, and customer relationships. Instruction qualifies students for the MS State Board of Barber Examiners certification examination. To be admitted to this program, a person must have a high school diploma or high school equivalency diploma (GED®, HiSET®, TASC™, or Mississippi Competency-Based High School Diploma) and must meet one of the following minimum assessment scores:  ACCUPLACER - Reading, 70; Math, 40; and English, 80; OR Next-Generation ACCUPLACER - Reading, 242; Math, 214; and English, 235.

    • Orientation - Any student (first-time, transfer, and part-time) who begins at Hinds Fall 2007 and later will be required to take Orientation (LLS 1312/RST 1312) to graduate from the College. Exception: Orientation credit (1-3 hrs) transferred to Hinds from another college will satisfy our orientation requirement. The RST/LLS 1312 graduation requirement will be waived for CTE students who have successfully obtained the Smart Start Credential and can submit the credential prior to applying for graduation.
