Program Description:
This area is designed to prepare students for employment as cosmetologists. Emphasis is placed on theory and practice involving hair styling, tinting, bleaching, anatomy, physiology, hygiene, bacteriology, sterilization, sanitation, shampooing, permanents, personality, haircutting, scalp treatments, beauty salon management and wigology.
To be admitted to this program, a person must have a high school diploma or high school equivalency diploma (GED®, HiSET®, TASC™, or Mississippi Competency-Based High School Equivalency) and have the following minimum assessment scores: ACT ® - Reading, 14; Math, 6; English 10; OR ACCUPLACER - Reading, 55; Math, 34; English, 60; OR Next-Generation ACCUPLACER - Reading, 233; Math, 210; English, 224. Upon completion of this program, a student is given a certificate which entitles him/her to take the State Cosmetology Examination for a license to become a licensed operator to operate his/her own shop or work with others.
**Completion Award: Associate of Applied Science in Occupational Education 62-64 SH
**Additional Graduation Requirement:
- Orientation - Any student (first-time, transfer, and part-time) who begins at Hinds Fall 2007 and later will be required to take Orientation (LLS 1312 /RST 1312 ) to graduate from the College. Exception: Orientation credit (1-3 hrs) transferred to Hinds from another college will satisfy our orientation requirement.
NOTE: A course for those who need updated skills training in Cosmetology is available AND/OR may be required. Please speak with the program advisor regarding more information on this course.
