Commercial Truck and Bus Driving

(VC-DTV)

Program Description:

The Commercial Truck Driving program is designed to prepare participants for employment in the field of transportation or as an enhancement or stackable credential to other career-technical programs currently being offered.  The curriculum content includes the Department of Transportation rules and regulations, Mississippi requirements for obtaining a commercial driver’s license, and the operations of a semi tractor-trailer.  Course delivery will include classroom and hands-on equipment training.  Employability, work maturity and basic educational skills will be taught.  Specific admission requirements to be met:

  1. Must be at least 18 years old to drive intrastate, 21 years old to drive interstate.  Most insurance companies will not accept drivers under 21 years of age.  If you are not yet 21, you must see the Commercial Truck Driving Navigator, as your employment may be limited.
  2. Pass a Department of Transportation (D.O.T.) physical for Commercial Truck Drivers and have the physical capability of reaching clutch and brake pedals while in driver’s position.  For a clarification of the federal regulations see www.fmcsa.gov and refer to part 391.47.
  3. Receive a negative test result on a drug test by a certified laboratory and have results submitted directly to the Career and Technical Dean at Hinds.
  4. An official copy of driving records, misdemeanor records and felony records must be submitted directly to the Career and Technical Dean at Hinds.
  5. Have a current valid driver’s license, social security card, and birth certificate.
  6. If no ACT® test scores are on file, take the ACCUPLACER placement test with no specific score required.
