Program Description:
The Administrative Office Technology (OST) program prepares students for a variety of positions in current business, administrative and professional fields, while helping them gain proficiency in all aspects of the office profession. The program incorporates hands-on, in-depth training with software packages to prepare students for administrative support careers in today’s modern offices. Students study computers, office systems and procedures, while skills such as communication, organization, interpersonal relations and critical thinking are also emphasized to prove agility in today’s fast-paced business world. Students will also learn how to support and help facilitate accurate communication and information exchange to internal and external customers on a timely basis. A wide range of skills is needed for positions in the office and administrative support fields, with changes in technology and the global workplace increasing the responsibilities covered by this position. Students who gain knowledge and experience have the advantage of applying these assets in almost any industry. Administrative professionals also have the advantage of an inside view of a company or organization, sometimes tailoring skills to a desired position.
Program graduates are employed in professional offices, educational institutions, government agencies, businesses, and industries. Graduates will also prepare and sit for an industry certification that may be useful for hiring or career advancement.
This program leads to an Associate of Applied Science Degree and is preparatory for employment upon graduation from Hinds Community College. Where a transfer to a senior college or university is desired, a conference should be scheduled with a community college counselor for advisement.
